RESEARCH BRIEF • 2 NOVEMBER 2026

ZnO in hydrodeoxygenation and fuel sulfur removal

A transparent, preliminary literature map separating direct HDO and adsorptive HDS from reactive adsorption, hydrogenation and hydrogen-free deoxygenation.

Updated search — 2 November 2026

37 distinct journal records: 5 newly added and 32 carried forward. Working classification: 7 direct/author-described ZnO-containing HDO, 1 adsorptive HDS (not conventional HDS), 24 reactive-adsorption desulfurization, and 5 other adjacent records. Thus 8 are direct or author-described HDO/adsorptive-HDS, but only 7 are HDO; neither sorbent category should be counted as conventional catalytic HDS. The 7 includes 4 inherited HDO labels that have not all been independently re-audited in this update. Direct conventional HDS/HDN additions: zero verified. This is a bounded preliminary literature map, not an exhaustive or full-text-verified systematic review.

The five additions comprise three author-described ZnO-containing HDO papers and two adjacent records (Zn-promoted HDO with unresolved oxide state; ZnAl₂O₄ spinel deoxygenation). The author-described bio-oil HDO entry requires closer pathway verification. 32 historical cards below are retained unchanged for continuity; their original counts and claims are historical, not the updated totals.

Search date: 2 November 2026. Discovery: OpenAlex public endpoint and scholarly searches; DOI/title metadata checked against Crossref, and specific additions against publisher or institutional records. Queries included guaiacol, phenol, bio-oil, fatty acid, ZnO, mixed oxides, HDO and desulfurization; screening was not exhaustive. Abstracts cannot validate catalyst working states, detailed product pathways or all reaction conditions. No supporting information was systematically inspected.

Historical original report follows. Its stated counts describe the earlier 32-record search only; use the updated counts above.

Historical search results — 32 records

Shortfall: the requested 40 direct hydrotreating/HDO papers were not verified. Only 5 direct HDO/author-described adsorptive-HDS papers were identified; the 24 related reactive-adsorption records and 3 other adjacent papers are clearly separated and must not be counted as direct HDO or conventional HDS. This is an abstract/metadata-level preliminary map, not a publication-ready systematic review.

No ZnO-specific hydrodenitrogenation paper was verified in the present search; this is a search limitation, not proof that none exists. Most records have not been full-text screened. Journal metadata were checked through DOI-registration metadata or OpenAlex records; reaction descriptions rely on title and abstract/record screening and should be confirmed against full texts.

What ZnO may contribute

For HDO, distinguish conversion, oxygen removal and product selectivity; for RADS, breakthrough capacity and sulfur balance are distinct from conversion. The model compounds and sulfur-removal studies cannot be assumed to predict real lignin-oil HDO.

Search and screening

Search date: 2 November 2026. OpenAlex was queried first, using combinations of zinc oxide/ZnO with hydrodeoxygenation, guaiacol, lignin, vanillin, hydrogen-assisted reactive adsorption desulfurization, hydrodesulfurization, hydrodenitrogenation and fatty acids. Crossref metadata, publisher records, independent scholarly web search, and DOI-linked records were then checked. Duplicate DOI strings were collapsed; journal-article status and titles were checked through Crossref or OpenAlex. Crossref rate limiting prevented universal Crossref confirmation, so OpenAlex was used as an independent bibliographic fallback.

Included: journal papers with ZnO explicitly identified in an examined record as support, mixed-oxide component, promoter or reactive-adsorbent component. Direct HDO and author-described adsorptive HDS are separate from RADS and other adjacent chemistry. Theoretical work is labeled. Excluded: patents, proceedings, unsupported zinc-only claims and DOI–title mismatches. Search results and abstracts are discovery evidence, not a substitute for complete papers or supporting information. Feed, precise phase under reaction and hydrogen conditions should be checked against each full paper. These results are not exhaustive and cannot support a claim of absence or priority.

Access: DOI links take readers to publisher or registration pages; full text may require subscription. Metadata source entries, author name spellings, years and feed-specific descriptions require a final source audit before citation in a manuscript. No unpublished material is included.
